A suburb of Grand Rapids, Kentwood was incorporated in 1967 from the remainder of Paris Township. It was designed to be a separate city from Grand Rapids and is named after James Kent, an American legal scholar that was essential in establishing many early American judicial principles.
History & Culture
Kentwood and Kent County form part of the fourth largest county in Michigan. It was originally founded in 1831 and was named after James Kent, who represented Michigan Territory in the dispute with Ohio over the Toledo Strip. Former President Gerald Ford was raised in the Grand Rapids area and he served as its U.S. Representative before he ascended to Vice President and eventually President.
Transportation
Interstate 96 serves as the main traffic artery through the area, crossing the state of Michigan from Lake Michigan in the west to Lansing and Detroit in the east. Interstate 196 also travels southwest to the Lake Michigan coastline and eventually merges with Interstate 94, giving access to Chicago. Gerald R. Ford International Airport and serves as a focus city for Allegiant Air. It offers connections to more than 25 cities nationwide.
